Take a behind the scenes look at Philippe Coutinho’s first moments at the Camp Nou after joining Barcelona.

Rafinha’s father has confirmed the Barcelona midfielder is set to join Inter Milan on loan until the end of the season.

Former Brazil international Mazinho says his son’s objective is to play regular football again and to hopefully return to the Brazil squad in time for the World Cup in Russia.

Sources confirmed to ESPN FC that Inter will have an option to sign Rafinha in the summer for million, with another potentially due in add ons if the deal is completed. However, that option to buy will become compulsory if the Italian side achieve Champions League qualification.

Luciano Spalletti’s Inter are third in Serie A, which would see them qualify for Europe’s premier competition next season, but Lazio and Roma are just two and three points behind them respectively with a game in hand.

“Rafinha’s objective is just to play,” Mazinho told Diario Sport. “It’s difficult for him to do that at Barcelona. There are a lot of good players [in his position] and it’s been similar for five years now.

“He’s had bad luck with injuries in these last two years and he just wants to play and feel happy doing what he likes doing at an excellent club like Inter. We hope that these three or four months will help him get back into the Brazil squad for the World Cup. He’s going to take advantage of this chance in Italy.”

Rafinha, 24, returned to action for Barca in Wednesday’s 1 0 defeat to Espanyol in the Copa del Rey,

making his first appearance in nine months. His last competitive outing for the club had been on April 3 last year against Granada, when he picked up a meniscus injury which left him needing two operations.

Rafinha has been unlucky with injuries in recent years.

Injuries have been cruel to Rafinha since he broke into the Barcelona first team. He missed the majority of the 2015 16 campaign with a ruptured cruciate ligament and even before injuring his meniscus last season, he’d missed a number of games due to a series of problems. A bruised rib, an Achilles tendon injury and a broken nose were among the reasons he regularly found himself on the treatment table.

Despite that, he had managed to make himself a regular under Luis Enrique, finding a place on the right side of midfield in a 3 4 3 formation.

However, with the signings of Paulinho and Philippe Coutinho, and the emergence of Barca B midfielder Carles Alena,

The FC crew rate the latest rumours as the transfer window hots up.

A lot can change in 153 days. In fact, a lot can change in three days, as Ernesto Valverde regularly points out when encouraged to get carried away by Barcelona’s brilliant season so far. But despite being nine points clear at the top of the league, 19 ahead of Real Madrid (who are fourth) and safely through to the Champions League knockout stages, Valverde refuses to get giddy. Instead, he prefers to centre in on football’s more capricious qualities.

“If we were 19 points behind Madrid, the press would have killed us,” Jordi Alba said last weekend, suggesting even Zinedine Zidane’s side get an easy ride in comparison to the Catalans.

Defeats at Barca can be met with obituaries, as was the case when Valverde’s side were manhandled by Madrid in August. Beaten 3 1 and 2 0 by Los Blancos in the Spanish Super Cup, even the players struggled to put on a brave face.

“We’re not having our best time as a team or a club,” Gerard Pique said after the second leg loss at the Bernabeu. “In the nine years I’ve been [at Barca], it’s the first time I feel inferior to Madrid.”

Pique was saying what everyone else was thinking. Not only had they been thoroughly outplayed by Madrid, who were fresh from winning La Liga and the Champions League, but they had just lost Neymar to Paris Saint Germain for million. Several players have since admitted the Brazilian’s departure did knock the dressing room.

But as Valverde stresses, football changes from one game to the next, so imagine how much can change in 153 days. That’s the time which elapsed between that defeat to Madrid in August and Wednesday’s Copa del Rey loss to rivals Espanyol at Cornella El Prat, which ended Barca’s 29 game unbeaten streak.

In the meantime, Barca have beaten Juventus 3 0, won 3 0 away at Madrid, come from 2 0 down against Real Sociedad to end “The Curse of Anoeta”, built up a commanding lead at the top of La Liga and progressed in the Champions League and the Copa del Rey. This time, then, a defeat is not followed by an obituary for once.

Barcelona lost their unbeaten run but remain in a strong position this season.

After the 1 0 loss at Espanyol, Pique even said: “If you could choose a day to lose, it might have been today,” because it will all count for nothing, apart from the end of a long unbeaten run, if Barca can turn things around in the second leg next week.

Teammate Sergio Busquets agreed, saying that he doesn’t think losing the game “is going to affect the team.”

Casting aside the pain of a first defeat to their city rivals since 2009 and their first ever reverse at Cornella El Prat, Pique has a point. While not wanting to lose their unbeaten run which falls short of the 39 game record set by Luis Enrique’s side two years ago Valverde’s calmness has transferred to his players and allowed them to apply common sense to the situation.

The loss came, after all, in a game which may not actually matter in the grander scheme of things. Barca lost, but they lost without a number of injured players (Samuel Umtiti, Javier Mascherano, Andres Iniesta, Ousmane Dembele, Philippe Coutinho and Paco Alcacer were all missing) and with Luis Suarez, Ivan Rakitic and Alba left on the bench. Barca lost, but they can still win the tie next week at Camp Nou.

There was an element of relief, even, to Pique’s comments. The longer the unbeaten streak went on, the more it was talked about and the more records appeared on the horizon. You become a target. Everyone wants to be the team to end that long run. That target remains in La Liga, but the bigger one has dropped.

In August, Barca had become a symbol of the club’s problems. Now, they’re becoming a symbol of their coach. Time will provide the real answers, but a Catalan derby defeat doesn’t look set to derail their season.

Luis Suarez, left, battles with Alberto de la Bella of Real Sociedad in Barcelona’s 1 0 loss to David Moyes’ side

David Moyes’ Real Sociedad held on to record a narrow 1 0 victory over Barcelona as they returned to winning ways at a damp Anoeta on Sunday evening.

An early own goal from Jordi Alba was all the hosts needed as they held off a second half onslaught from substitute Lionel Messi, with Luis Suarez also denied as Sociedad moved up to 13th in the Primera Division table.

Goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli and the Sociedad defence worked hard to keep the Catalans at bay during Moyes’ eighth game in charge as Sociedad claimed their third home victory in succession over Barca, who remain one point behind leaders Real Madrid.

After just two minutes of play, the home side took the lead as Alba put into his own net in a failed attempt to clear the ball from the Barca goal,

slotting past teammate Claudio Bravo into the bottom corner from Xabi Prieto’s cross from the right of the 18 yard box.

Xavi came very close to netting an equaliser for Barca midway through the first half but his curled free kick just outside the Sociedad box went narrowly over the bar.

Moments after the half hour mark Barcelona had an appeal for handball against Inigo Martinez dismissed by referee Carlos del Cerro Grande as they were denied what looked to be a clear penalty.

The visitors continued to search for an equaliser with Pedro shooting wide from close range minutes later, while Jeremy Mathieu was unfortunate to send his long range effort over the crossbar as Barca pressed forward.

Sociedad’s Prieto was brought down by Alba in front of the Barca goal a little over 10 minutes before the break, but appeals for a spot kick went unheard as Messi warmed up on the touchline.

David Moyes reacts to a booking in Real Sociedad’s 1 0 win vs. Barcelona.

Moyes was furious as he took to his technical area two minutes before the break after Spain defender Martinez was booked for what looked like a slight touch that brought Suarez down.

Barca had a good chance to level from the resulting free kick as Xavi picked out Pedro 25 yards out but his powerful shot forced a great save out of Rulli and the hosts went in at halftime with a narrow advantage.

Messi joined the action at the start of the second half, while Neymar came on for Pedro after 58 minutes in an attempt to breathe some life into the Barca side.

Messi came close to scoring a leveller midway through the second half but he sent Neymar’s cross past Rulli’s goal.

Neymar had an effort saved with 20 minutes left as he played the ball into the 18 yard box before Rulli came out and claimed it with a diving save before the threat became any more dangerous.

Messi collected Suarez’s flick back moments later but the Argentina international shot over the bar as the away side continued to dominate.

Luis Enrique’s men still found it hard to break down the Sociedad defence but were not short of chances, with Martinez clearing two good efforts to deny them as the half wore on.

Barca searched hard for an equaliser as time began to run out and Suarez broke the line of defenders before the ball was quickly cleared, then his header was tipped over the bar by Rulli.

Tempers began to fray towards the end of the match with Alfred Finnbogason and Alba both booked following challenges while Carlos Vela also limped off for the hosts,

but they held on for maximum points during the three minutes of added time.

During the second half of the game, which saw the Catalan side extend their unbeaten run to 29 games in all competitions, left back Alba became embroiled in a spat with one of the home supporters.

“I was caught, no?” he asked reporters when asked if he had stuck his middle finger up at the fan in question.

“If I offended anyone then I apologise. I’m like that on the pitch. They were saying all kind of things to me and I took it as part of the spectacle. I didn’t mean to annoy anyone. If the person that offended me knew me, I am sure they would come to dinner with me.”

La Real had raced into a two goal lead with first half efforts from Willian Jose and Juanmi as they looked to extend their unbeaten home record against Barca to eight La Liga games.

However, Paulinho scored before half time to drag Barca back into the match and a brace from Luis Suarez and a Lionel Messi free kick completed the turnaround in the pouring Basque rain.

Jordi Alba apologised for his gesture toward a Real Socieded supporter on Sunday.

The three points restored Barca’s nine point lead over Atletico Madrid at the halfway stage of the campaign.

Valencia and Real Madrid, meanwhile, trail Ernesto Valverde’s side by 11 and 19 points, respectively, although the latter do have a game in hand against Leganes.

“No,

La Liga is still not in the bag, but the sensations are good,” Alba said when it was suggested Barca have already wrapped up the title.

“We hope that we can keep going until the end of the season. Atletico are second and best placed, but all of our rivals want to win the league and will give their all in the title race until the final day.”

But Alba did suggest that Madrid, who were beaten by Villarreal on Saturday and are without a win in their last three league games, are getting away without too much criticism.

“If we were 19 points back from Real Madrid, they would kill us here [in the Catalan press],” he added. “We’re more critical here, the press and the supporters. There [in Madrid], they cover it up more.”

ESPN FC’S Steve Nicol talks whether or not players are able to resist the temptation of playing for Real Madrid, Barcelona or PSG.

BARCELONA Ernesto Valverde insisted Barcelona have not moved away from their model of giving homegrown players a chance after the club broke their transfer record for the second time this season with the signing of Philippe Coutinho.

Barca could end up paying Liverpool million for Coutinho, who replaces Ousmane Dembele, who arrived from Borussia Dortmund for an initial in the summer, as the club’s record signing.

The Catalan club have often played on the fact they have been able to develop some of the world’s best players without having to spend big money in the transfer market, such as Andres Iniesta, Xavi Hernandez and Lionel Messi.

But with fewer players progressing to the first team from the club’s La Masia academy in recent years, Valverde defended the decision to invest heavily on Coutinho and Dembele and pointed out that Barca have always signed the world’s best players.

“Barcelona’s model has always been the same,” the coach said in a news conference on Wednesday. “[The club] have always gone to the transfer market to sign the best players in the world. Many of the very best players have played here.”

Johan Cruyff, Diego Maradona, Romario, Ronaldo, Ronaldinho and Zlatan Ibrahimovic represent a handful of the big players that Barca have spent big money on in the past.

However, Valverde did acknowledge the importance of La Masia, as well.

“At the same time, we always try to look at the academy,” he added. “We want to bring players up [to the first team] based on their style of play and their development.

“You have to remember, we have been through a generation with special players like Xavi and Iniesta (.) sometimes more players will come through from the academy; sometimes there will be less. But we also need to sign players to keep ourselves at the top.”

With the arrival of Coutinho, Barca find themselves needing to reduce a wage bill which is threatening to spiral out of control.

Sources have told ESPN FC that the club are working on “several outgoings” with Javier Mascherano, Arda Turan, Aleix Vidal, Rafinha and Gerard Deulofeu all possible makeweights.

Valverde wouldn’t be drawn on any of the individual cases. He did admit, though, that he would like to work with a smaller squad, given he now has 25 players registered to play for the first team.

“I have always preferred to work with smaller squads,” he said. “I don’t want to be working with 20 odd players because then you have to leave a lot of people out and rotate more. And we have the B team, too, where we can also go for players.”

Barca host Celta Vigo in the second leg of their Copa del Rey round of 16 tie on Thursday at Camp Nou. The two sides drew 1 1 at Balaidos last week, giving the Blaugrana a slight advantage going into the game.

“The tie is slightly tilted in our favour because of the away goal, but the advantage is minimal,” Valverde said.

“But Celta always score away from home, they have done in every away game this season. We won’t have [the away goal] in our heads.

“It would be a mistake to speculate about whether we are in a good position or not going into the game because that leads to mistakes. We want to win the game.”

peuterey daunenweste Barcelona deny reported Antoine Griezmann agreement made

Following their performances in Barcelona’s first league win at Real Sociedad since 2007, Luis Suarez and Lionel Messi top this week’s Player Power Rankings.

Barcelona have denied reaching an agreement with Atletico Madrid forward Antoine Griezmann, contradicting reports which had appeared in the Catalan press on Saturday.

Diario Sport suggested Barca and Griezmann have already agreed on personal terms over a summer transfer, adding that if either party broke the deal there would be a “financial penalty.”

Reports across the Spanish media had previously claimed on Friday that Philippe Coutinho would not take the No. 7 shirt at Camp Nou because it was being reserved for Griezmann.

The France international’s release clause reverts to million at the end of the season and Barca are thought to be willing to pay it, if they can’t come to an agreement with Atletico first.

However, after being reported to FIFA by Atletico last month following comments made by director Guillermo Amor about Griezmann, Barca have reacted angrily to the latest bout of rumours.

“Barcelona strongly deny the information which has appeared in different media outlets in recent hours in reference to Atletico Madrid player Antoine Griemzmann and a supposed move to our club,” the Catalans said in a statement.

“Barcelona express their unease at the reports and reiterate our respect towards the institution of Atletico Madrid.”

Barcelona have been strongly linked with a summer move for Atletico Madrid’s Antoine Griezmann.

Amor was asked in December about Barca’s desire to sign Griezmann after a Mundo Deportivo report that president Josep Maria Bartomeu had held a meeting with the forward’s family.

“If that’s what [Mundo Deportivo] said, it’s possible,” Amor told Movistar+. “Maybe there’s been a meeting and things have advanced, although I don’t know. There’s a good understanding, maybe there have been talks.

“Rumours are inevitable in football. In the case of Griezmann, there are a lot of players we could be talking with, initiating some kind of relationship with if there’s an opportunity.

“We’re obliged to have contact with players. It’s something which is done.”

After Atletico made a complaint to FIFA due to Barcelona’s “repeated contact with Griezmann and his people,” a source at the Catalan club told ESPN FC “there have been no negotiations with Griezmann and, therefore, no irregularities have been committed.”

Griezmann, 26, signed a new contract with Atletico last June, turning down a move to Manchester United after the La Liga side’s appeal against a transfer ban was rejected.

However, Atletico coach Diego Simeone has since said he would not stand in Griezmann’s way if he decided to leave the Wanda Metropolitano for pastures new.

Griezmann scored in Atletico’s 1 1 draw with Girona on Saturday, and afterward Simeone said his star attacker was not distracted by the reports.

Despite breaking their transfer record twice in the last six months with the signings of Ousmane Dembele and Coutinho for a combined Barca are still thought to be keen on signing Griezmann in the summer.

peuterey verde Barcelona bid farewell to dressing room leader Javier Mascherano

peutery donna Barcelona bid farewell to dressing room leader Javier Mascherano

Javier Mascherano admits he needs a fresh start during his emotional farewell to his Barcelona teammates.

At the front of the Auditori 1899, about 100 metres away from Camp Nou, there were 18 trophies pristinely laid out. In front of them sat the Barcelona first team squad, including a suited Lionel Messi and former players Carles Puyol and Eric Abidal. To the left of them, sat the Barcelona board, headed by president Josep Maria Bartomeu. To their left, there were around 100 journalists. Everyone had come for the same thing: to say goodbye to Javier Mascherano.

If you had told Mascherano back in 2010, when he joined Barca from Liverpool for million, that he’d be receiving such a send off seven and a half years later, he wouldn’t have believed you.

“I lasted longer than I thought,” the Argentina international admitted at his farewell event on Wednesday, holding back the tears. “I arrived seven years ago to fulfil a dream and now it’s time to wake up. The dream’s over. He arrived when Sergio Busquets, Xavi Hernandez and Andres Iniesta were at their collective peak. A young Thiago Alcantara was on the verge of a breakthrough, too, and a year later Cesc Fabregas joined. There was just no room in Pep Guardiola’s midfield.

There was room in defence, though. And with Puyol ageing and battling injury problems and Abidal fighting (and beating) cancer, Mascherano eventually found a place alongside Gerard Pique. It all stems back to a challenge he made on Arsenal’s Nicklas Bendtner in the Champions League (he was actually playing in midfield that night, but from then on he dropped back into defence) in 2011 when the Dane looked set to knock Barca out of Europe in the final minute of the game at Camp Nou.

“That tackle on Bendtner marked a before and an after between me and the supporters,” Mascherano reflected. “Until that moment, things hadn’t been easy for me.

“That tackle gave me the confidence to contribute more to the team. That moment marked my life.

“I’d known it would be difficult when I came here. We have the best midfield in the world. My characteristics seemed to go against everything Barcelona stood for. Yet here I am. I’ve given my all and I’ve given my best.”

Javier Mascherano had a farewell party in his honour at Barcelona on Wednesday.

Barca confirmed one of the January transfer window’s worst kept secrets this week: Mascherano is off to China. He will be reunited with Manuel Pellegrini who coached him during his emerging years at River Plate at Hebei Fortune. The Chinese Super League side will pay for the transfer.

Mascherano, 33, leaves having made over 300 appearances for the club and won 18 trophies although he didn’t really contribute to the 18th, the 2010 Spanish Super Cup laid out at the front of the Auditori 1899 including four league titles and two Champions Leagues.

But it’s the way he rose to the challenge of becoming a Barca player and the words of his teammates which reveal more than any of his achievements on the pitch.

In a leaving video, Jordi Alba thanked him “for all the advice” he’s given him over the years and Luis Suarez said he will never forget the “chats and anecdotes” they have shared together. Samuel Umtiti spoke about how much he’s learned from him and Lionel Messi said: “Everything we have done together at the club, the good and the bad things, will stay with me. It’s been beautiful to share so much with you.”

Iniesta added: “It’s been a real privilege to share so many things with you. Not just the titles, but the day to day stuff, our chats and the things we’ve always talked about. I share a lot with you, the way you understand sport and life in general. I am so very grateful to have been able to share a dressing room with you.”

Mascherano’s input at Barca extends beyond the pitch. He’s one of the leaders (if not the leader) in the dressing room, voted one of the club’s four captains by his peers, ahead of Pique, who as an experienced La Masia graduate would usually be a certainty for the role.

The Barcelona midfielder is heading to China, to play for Hebei Fortune.

Every time he plays, those same qualities which see him so highly regarded by his teammates professionalism, leadership, commitment and understanding are evident on the pitch. Even this season, in downtime after goals or when there’s a stoppage in play, it’s his ear coach Ernesto Valverde spits instructions into.

“Sometimes you have to accept the reality,” Mascherano admits, having seen his place in the side gradually taken by Umtiti over the last 18 months. “I’m not the player I was. It’s normal, natural. I needed to make this change. I didn’t feel like I could revert the situation here. The quality of the centre backs in the team is so high.”

Mascherano has always maintained that you need to know when to leave a good thing. Why hang about and risk souring the relationship if you don’t feel you have as much to offer anymore? Why not go in search of regular football in the months leading up to a World Cup, your last with your country?

Not that it makes leaving any easier, but it makes it feel right. Especially when it was never meant to last this long.

“The hardest thing about playing for Barcelona is that you know that one day you will have to leave,” he said.

“But I feel privileged, fortunate for everything I have been able to experience here. I never imagined I would stay here for so long and be part of the club’s history.”
